I was lucky enough to have wine loving parents, my Father developed a taste for fine German wines while posted there in the Army. He continued his interest throughout his life falling for the Loire and Bordeaux regions. His favorite wine was Chateau Margaux and I can still remember sharing wines with him in my teens.
Fiona and I often traveled to France with friends to buy wine from ‘La Chaise’ wine shop in Boulogne, usually after a great fish lunch in a pop up restaurant in the sitting room of a town house! We also visited the Wine Society in Montreuil sur Mer, often staying over to take advantage of visit to ‘La Grenouillere’ then a very small and avant guard restaurant.
This started a deep affection for France and its jewels, after many holidays we decided to live there with our children for a while. In fact we stayed nearly 10 years and had a fabulous time.
Living near St Emilion outside Bordeaux, we were surrounded by wine and with the children’s schools filled with wine making families it was impossible not to get embroiled. Every family was fiercely proud of their wine and how it is made, whether it was great or small and there was no choice but to get stuck in.
In this current chapter, I am lucky enough to be able to indulge myself and my passion by developing a robust and varied wine list for The Kestel. In 2017 we will be starting wine dinners as part of The Kestel Club, as well as offering customers the chance to buy wine at special prices to take home.
